Obituary for Ernest A. Manzo

Ernest A. Manzo
Millinocket and Maricopa, AZ- Ernest Antonio Manzo, 87, passed peacefully January 24, 2018. He was born May 7, 1930 in Millinocket the son of Giuseppe and Emma Manzo. Ernie loved to tell stories of his childhood days in Little Italy and was very compassionate about the town he lived in. He graduated from Stearns High School, class of 1947. In 1951, Ernie attended Aroostook State Normal School in Presque Isle, Maine, graduating with a teaching degree. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean War. Ernie married Patricia Goodwin in August 1956 and enjoyed 32 years together spending quality time in Millinocket and at their Smith Pond camp. Some of his favorite pastimes included cutting firewood, fishing, hunting, boating, and snow sledding. He especially loved working with wood, constantly improving his camp and home on Katahdin Ave along with making special projects for his family. He first started teaching in the Katahdin Region at Medway Elementary School. The rest of his career he enjoyed teaching and working as a vice principal for the Millinocket school system. Ernie was honored to teach in the Katahdin Area and always reflected on his great fortune to work with so many students. He loved coaching basketball and being part of the Stearns basketball history. Ernie married his second wife, Jeannette Desjardins in 1994 and spent most of their 19 years between Smith Pond, Maine and Clearwater, Florida. He was a 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of St Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Northern Timber Cruisers and Tampa Bay Lion’s Club. Ernie is survived by two sons, Thomas Manzo and his wife, Shirley; Matthew Manzo; daughter, Bethany Ash and her husband Hamilton; step-daughter, Janelle Strange and her husband Tom. Grandchildren, Jessica Orgo and her husband Nicholas, Joseph Manzo; Rebekah Neubauer and her husband Steven; Hamilton Ash and his wife Rebekka; five great-grandchildren, Kate, Penelope, and Jack Neubauer; Amara and Carmen Ash; two sisters, Rita Goode and Sister Mary Manzo; one brother, Richard Manzo and his wife Loretta; and many nieces and nephews. Ernie was predeceased by his wife Patricia Manzo; infant sister, Antoinette Manzo; brother, Franklin Manzo; half-sister, Maria Stella Cerenzia; and second wife Jeannette Manzo. A service of remembrance will be held this summer in Millinocket, ME at Lamson Funeral Home. Gifts in Ernest’s memory may be made to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O.
